Chapter Fifteen

Inside the meeting room at the clubhouse, Bull peeled an orange, tossing the rind into the trash can. Everything was back on track. He had Lila settled. The club was organized.

"You were the only one harassed by the cops. Even the Feds are staying away from everyone." Onyx pulled his feet off the top of the table and sat forward in the chair.

"What's your guess? Are they coming after me or the club?" Bull wiped the juice from his lips.

Onyx inhaled heavily. "I don't know. We'll have to watch the younger members."

He could handle himself. Prez knew he'd never rat out Killere. But the newer members were still earning trust within the club. They were the vulnerable spots within the motorcycle club.

"Nobody is going to rat out the club." He sucked the wedge into his mouth. "If it comes down to fearing for our freedom and you don't trust newer riders, keep them close to the clubhouse. Put them in lockdown."

"That's the last fucking thing I want to do." Onyx sighed heavily. "Word would get out, and the truckers would spread the news far and wide. No, we need to keep operating as normal."

"I know that if they come for me, I'm not letting them take me down. I have Lila back, and I'm not going to spend more time away from her." He wiped his hands on the back of his jeans. "Speaking of, I'm going to head out. Lila's walking laps around the clubhouse while I'm here. She's due in at work soon. I'm probably going to hang out by the restaurant after I drop her off."

"Doing laps?" asked Onyx.

"She calls it exercise." He walked around the table. "I'll catch you later."

Onyx stood. "Hang on a minute."

The president of Killere reached into his pocket and removed his wallet. Fingering a few bills, he tossed them on the table toward him. "That's for the painting Willow picked out the other day."

Ignoring the money, he opened the door, shaking his head in amusement. It cost him barely anything to put paint on canvas. He wouldn't make Onyx and Willow pay if they wanted one of his pieces to hang in their house.

"Take it," said Onyx.

"It's a gift." He turned around and met Onyx's gaze. "Nobody else will want a picture of a willow tree."

"It means something to her—" Onyx dipped his chin. "And, me. That's the tree on the knoll in front of our house. The kids play under it." Onyx voice lowered. "Willow trees never die. They reproduce and keep growing."

Understanding that something else was going on with Onyx, Bull pointed at his president. "See? Right there, you already know more about the painting than I do. To me, it's just a fucking tree."

He walked out of the meeting room and out of the clubhouse. Lila sat on his bike, listening to Starla talk. The two women seemed to be getting along. Both of them worked in the food industry, which gave them something in common.

Starla spotted him first and waved before speaking to Lila and walking backward toward the diner.
