Types of Herbal Remedies

Whether you purchase your herbs at a store or through mail order or decide to try your hand as an herbalist, use the following instructions as your guide.

BASIC TEA (OR INFUSION) RECIPE

An infusion is a tea made from the leaves and flowers of herbs or from certain berries. Always use pure spring water, distilled water, or filtered water. Bring the water to a boil, then pour the water over the herb. Allow it to steep in a covered container for five to ten minutes. The standard formula for a basic tea is one teaspoon of dried herb to one cup of boiling water, although you might use less herb if it is very strong, more if it is weak. If you are using green (fresh) herbs, use half an ounce of herb to one pint of boiling water. Remember: when making a tea, never boil the herb with the water, as boiling can rob herbal flowers and leaves of their medicinal properties.

Strain out the herbs, and drink while warm. (If you prefer a sweeter-tasting tea, add half a teaspoon of either cardamom powder or licorice root powder to the herb and steep together. You will not need to do this if fennel or licorice is part of a compound tonic. They are natural herbal sweeteners.) Commercially prepared teas are obviously not as strong as those you make from your own herbs. I do recommend the Alvita or the Select brands of herbal tea because they are fresh and therefore effective. The usual dose for a tea is two to four cups a day.
