Jake and Vicci sat in the park, sharing a little bag of warm donuts. The morning had been a success: following the Unit Manager's approval, it had been agreed that Jake would return to work at the start of the month. Just for a couple of hours a day at first, then gradually building up to working full hours over two months, but it was a start.
âYou looking forward to going back?â Vicci asked.
âYeah,â Jake sighed. âBeats rotting on the sofa.â
âDon't you give me that, young man. What's your beef?â
âWhen I go back, will we still be able to meet like this?â
She tossed her hair out of her eyes. âI don't see why not, if that's what you want.â
âWon't people talk?â
âLet them, Jakey-boy. No skin off my nose, and I hope it's none off yours. Tongues will always wag when people of limited intelligence are bored.â
Jake sighed. âYou're right.â He ran a hand through his hair. âI just found out that Nina's having an affair with her deputy head.â
Her face fell: âYou mean you lied at the hearing?â
He nodded. âI had to! Vicci, you know as well as I do that I need that job.â
âWell yeah, but-â She paused. âI expected better of you, young man.â
âI really am sorry. If it's any consolation, she kept it a secret from me for five years, so when I did find out, it was as if she had been playing away!â
Vicci tutted. âYou're a fuckin' dickhead.â
âWhat?â
âI felt sorry for you, giving all that chat about your girlfriend cheating on you with another woman, and she hadn't been! I shagged you to make you feel better.â
âShe was! And you did!â
âYou lied to me, Jake. You said you'd caught them doing it. You made me fall in love with you under false pretences. That poor girl never cheated on you, but you cheated on her, didn't yâ? Ya fuckinâ little gobshite.â
âI suspected she was, but she's certainly cheating on me now!â He paused. âDid you just say-?â
âJust shut it, will y'?â She moved away from him on the bench.
âVicci.â
âBloody men, you're all the same.â
âWell, you should know, darling! You used to be one of us!â
She whirled around to face him. âNot cool.â
âAlright, sorry. Vicci, it was a little bit of an embellishment, that's all. A slight misrepresentation for a good cause. â
âMisrepresentation? You mean you fucking lied to save your arse.â
âWhatever.â Jake kept his tone low and slow. âLook, I was hurting, pissing my life away. And you, you've brought me out of that. You've had me looking forward to lunchtime like it's a date or something. You gave me something to get dressed for. And you're so bloody together. You say and do all the right things, you make me laugh and you are the only person who has ever managed to whip my arse on FIFA. And you just have to give me that look that says, 'I've got your number, sunshine,' and I just turn to jelly!â He sighed. âYou're fucking beautiful and I love you, even if you do support Everton.
