I expected him to be mad or shoot me a stern lecture about how my criminal activities could get me in so much trouble, not to mention the shame on our family and the worry my parents would have to endure but he was so chill about it.

“Let’s grab some lunch,” was all he said as we walked down the street together to one of the fast-food places nearby.

“Really? So…you’re not mad?” I asked excitedly.

Zayn looked like he was trying hard not to smile. “Dude, I’m just glad it isn’t some kind of drug trafficking ring or sex cult. I expected so much worse. But…” He looked at me with a serious expression and pointed a finger at me. “That doesn’t mean it’s not worrying. You know how dangerous this stuff is.”

I shrugged and turned my face up to the sun as we strolled, shoulder to shoulder. “I know and we’re super careful. But the thrill of getting away with it…. Zayn…it’s unlike anything else. It’s like an addiction.”

When I glanced at him, he was watching me with a look of admiration on his face. “I had no idea you were so smart,” he said.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “I don’t know whether to be offended or flattered.”

Zayn shook his head and gestured with his hands like he wanted me to understand something. “No, Asher, I mean…I know it’s illegal but with skills like yours, you could go places.”

With a brief laugh, I held his shoulders from behind to guide him inside the restaurant. “I am going places, bro. Wait till you see the zeroes in my bank balance.”

The smell of fried food and sweet shakes invaded our nostrils and I sighed, my stomach grumbling even though I had just eaten an hour ago.

“What do you want to have? My treat,” I said to him, feeling a lot lighter after getting everything out in the open.

The guys, I would deal with later. But not keeping Zayn in the dark about this meant more to me right now.

“I don’t know. Some fries and coke. I’m not really that hungry,” he said as he looked around for a table for us. “I’ll be over there.”

I watched him walk away, looking so good in his blue jeans and black t-shirt this morning. His walk was always so laid back and casual. Despite not calling any attention to himself, Zayn still invited looks from people his age and even some from people who were double his age. He hardly paid attention, but I did. I always paid attention to him. To the battle that raged within him every day. The one he fought especially for me.

We were digging into our food ten minutes later with conversation and laughter surrounding us, and it felt so good just sitting there enjoying a date with him. And if I showed him a little bit of affection by touching him here and there, it wasn’t even a big deal because we were related. Not that anyone would be able to tell with him being brown and me being white.
