I took the opportunity to visit Raven and Ma at the house one afternoon when Maggie and Isaac had gone out. Ma herself was gone when I arrived, so it was Raven who answered the door.

He didn’t say anything, just walked away, leaving me to follow in and close up behind me.

“Ma not in?” I asked.

“She’s out getting groceries, a few meds for me from the pharmacy too,” he spoke without turning to me, fixing himself a coffee.

“I’ll have one too,” I said, sitting down at the kitchen table.

He only made a coffee for himself then sat down, staring at me and waiting.

I shook my head and then looked around the room. We’d all been born with stubborn resolve. “So how ya doin’?”

“Probably the same as you,” he said.

“Raven, look, I didn’t know this was gonna happen. I didn’t know about Dagger, or the gang, or the house—”

“And why is that?” he shot back.

I looked away to find some sort of distraction and only found the portrait of my father on the fridge staring down at me.

“You know I never needed you to come back,” Raven stated. “I didn’t need you to save me, or Ma, or anyone. I just wanted to talk to you, man. Eight years and you gave us nothing. Yet, you answered Rip straight away.”

I paused and asked myself… And why was that? Well, it was only because I thought I’d seen Maggie in Holbeck, shopping in the supermarket. Had that not happened, who knows what I would’ve done? Gone on ignoring them? Gone on pretending that I didn’t have a whole life back in Ramton? Avoided the place like the plague?

He shook his head then looked away. “Anyway, so you’re back. Bet you’re gonna be Mister Hero now, huh?”

“C’mon man, we’ve always been good,” I began.

“We have. Which is what confused the shit outta me, Hawk. You just abandoned us. You just abandoned everybody, regardless of everyone else’s shit too.” He breathed through gritted teeth. “You didn’t even think about us once either. Otherwise, you woulda called, visited, or—at least sent a fucking email.”

I stared at the table. “Well, I’m here now, aren’t I?” I wasn’t getting any slack from anyone. Tinges of regret always came into my mind when I interacted with anyone in town, except Maggie.

“And what’re you gonna do?”

“I’m gonna right all the shit I fucked up. I’m gonna whoop whoever knocked your ass down. I’m gonna get the farm back. I’m gonna help out at the dojo. And I’m going to keep doing so until everyone cuts me some fucking slack!” I was standing and hadn’t realized that I’d booted my chair over. “Look I know I’ve fucked up. You don’t think I wanted to come back? I did many times, but the more I delayed that, the easier it became to think that no one wanted me here either. Cause it took you seven years to start calling too, Raven. I know I left, but no one chased me either.” I was heaving breaths.
