Chapter 14

I went to sleep after giving Buster dinner, as I was exhausted, physically and mentally. He still didn't look like his normal self, so I made a mental note to take him to the veterinarian the next day. Although, I suspected the problem was not a medical situation; it was likely just him being uncomfortable being here. I wished that I could pack up my bags and just leave. At least, for Buster’s sake if not Liam’s, but I was knee-deep in the situation. I couldn’t just leave. I had to stay and help solve the mystery.

If I left without solving what was going on, I would spend the next couple of years thinking about how I could have done things differently. I most definitely would not have peace of mind, knowing that the local children were on the receiving end of something sinister going on here. Maybe if it were adults, I would have found it much easier to just ignore everything and leave while I still could.

With the million thoughts going through my mind, I slept

fitfully. Finally, I gave up on sleep and checked my clock. It was four in the morning. Unbelievably, I had wrestled with sleep for ten hours.

By the time I woke up completely, I had sluggishly bathed and brushed. Then I went back to bed and with my laptop. I hadn’t used it much since I’d come. That was exactly how I intended my vacations to be. In fact, this was the first vacation that I had truly been able to stay away from my laptop without feeling the same way drug addicts must have felt when they were in withdrawal. I had not gotten around to using it since I had used it at Lucy's the other day.

I opened my laptop to check my emails and some news on the publishing scene. I opened my mail to see about a hundred emails waiting for me. I gasped, wondering why I had so many. I clicked on them one after the other.

Emily, your book has changed my life. I know that it is just fiction, but it really sparked a creative part of me. Because of you, right now I am working on my own story. I love how you give life to your characters. I love everything about your works, and this last book you released is one of the best I have read in my thirty years of life.

I was not expecting that ending.

You are a magnificent writer. Keep up the good work

Felix Mary

New Zealand

Now I understood where all the messages were coming from. Despite warning my editor to keep my email away from the book, I could see that he had ended up adding it anyway. I preferred it when people dropped their reviews on social media and their blogs instead, as that helped build hype for my books.

Getting them directly emailed was too much for me to handle, and I wished that the publishing company had respected my wishes instead of imposing theirs on me.
