Howard Spring (1889â1965) was born in Tiger Bay in Cardiff, the son of a gardener who died when Howard was only 12 years old. He was forced to leave school and worked initially as an errand boy, eventually managing to move into journalism. After working for local Cardiff and Yorkshire newspapers he got a job with the Manchester Guardian in 1915. His career as a writer of books didnât start till the early 1930s. His first great success came with his novel O Absalom! (1938), later retitled My Son, my Son! He is also remembered for his 1940 novel Fame is the Spur, which is set within the socialist labour movement around a fictionalised Ramsay McDonald, and was adapted into a 1947 film starring Michael Redgrave.
âChristmas Honeymoonâ was published in The Queenâs Book of the Red Cross (1939). Printed in the early months of the Second World War, it was sponsored by Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI, and was intended to raise funds for medical aid. It included contributions from fifty authors, poets and artists, such as A. A. Milne, Daphne Du Maurier, Georgette Heyer, Cecil Beaton and Dame Laura Knight.
