“So that’s what it’s like to have sex with a vampire,” said Eve, after we’d lain in the darkness for hours, wrapped up and French kissing in one another’s arms.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s a romantic way to put it . . .” I said.

She turned and grinned at me. She ran her fingers through my goatee, and her bright eyes shone through the black of the room.

“It was incredible,” she said. “I was nowhere near prepared for how intense it would be. And how—how intimate it would feel.”

I squeezed her warm body tight, and pulled her closer to me.

“I always dreamed of being this close to someone,” I said in a low voice.

“Me too,” she said. “But after everything I’ve been through, I—I guess I didn’t really believe it could happen.”

“It did happen,” I said, “and thank God for that.”

The two of us leaned into one another and kissed, for a long, long moment. I held tightly to her beneath the cover of the sheets, thinking I would never let her go.

And then a chilling voice sounded from the black of night, and instantly my blood ran cold.

“You thought it was over? You actually believed you could rid yourself of me so easily?”

I leaped up in bed, my heart racing. I swore to God that the voice must be inside my head, that she must somehow have possessed me again.

But no—it was even worse than that.

Eve was staring at the foot of the bed beside me, the sheets clutched against her breasts. I followed the line of her sight, and to my horror saw two

glowing red eyes shining at us, and a dark silhouette looming over the bed, its batlike wings spread out across the expanse of the room.

“Hello my love,” she said, and the words made my muscles tense.

“I’m not your love!” I growled at her, my blood boiling.

She laughed. “Don’t be silly,” she said. “I’m a part of you.”

“No! You’re not. You never were, and you never will be!”

“Oh, darling,” she said, shaking her head. “You can cast out a demon, but you can never destroy her. Not really. I’ve waited, all this time for you. I’ve lurked on the periphery, certain that some trace of you would emerge. I could never forget what we shared. And tonight, at last, you came of age. You found your bloodmate, and released your pheromones to the winds. You led me right to you, and at just the right moment. Lately I’ve been starving . . .”

There was a violent rush of movement. Eve screamed, and I threw myself at Lilith, bursting into smoke as I tackled her in midair. As hard as she beat her wings, it wasn’t enough to stop me from plowing her toward the far wall of the bedroom. I slammed her hulking body into the wall, no longer the slender angel she’d pretended to be for so long, but the monstrous gargoyle that had all the while lurked beneath her delicate surface.

She opened up her wretched maw, and flames lurched from deep inside her, spitting out into the room.
