Chapter 15

Stephano

The meeting could not have gone any better. I knew James would not need my assistance with this, but it was the only excuse I had. Sitting in that meeting with him, I could not be prouder of his work. “You did great in there, my friend,” I tell James giving him a clap on the shoulder.

“Thank you, although you know as well as I do, I could have landed this deal on my own,” he replies.

“Yes, I know, but I just felt I should be here for you. Like I said, it gave Ginger and me the excuse to visit New York.”

He looks down at his watch. “Well, I need to get going; I’m meeting Hannah for lunch.” He says just as Tony comes running up to us.

“We have a situation,” Tony states, and I can tell this is not good.

“What do you mean by that?” I ask anxiously.

“There’s been an attack at your mansion.”

My heart stops and plummets into my stomach. Not again. Not. Again. Images of Ginger and Hope run through my mind, but I force myself to push them aside. “Move. Now!” I demand as Tony, James, Olivia, and I race to our vehicle. Tony floors it out of the garage, and that’s when the questions start.

“It has to be Czar,” James says. “Who else could it be?”

Caleb. My son of a bitch brother, that’s who.

“My brother,” I hiss as I clutch my fists in rage.

James shakes his head. “Look, I don’t like your brother, but I doubt he’s behind this. If anything, he’s put his own life in danger just coming here.”

I stare up at James, realizing he is utterly clueless about the hit that’s out on me. I should have known better than to ever doubt my best friend.

“You really don’t know about the hit out on Stephano, do you, James?” Olivia asks, and James’s mouth drops.

“What hit?” He asks, flipping his head back and forth between Olivia and me.

I glance over at Olivia and then back to James. “Gio showed up at my cabin a few days ago. He said Czar had a hit on me because someone had leaked my whereabouts. The only people that knew about my whereabouts were the people who were at my wedding. That’s why I’m here. That’s why my family is in danger. Someone close to me is a traitor, and I now know that person is my brother.”

James stares at me in shock. “Why didn’t you tell me about this, Stephano?” He asks with a bite in his tone. As I begin to answer his question, he narrows his eyes at me. “You thought it was me, didn’t you?”

I run my hands down my face. “I hate having to admit it, but yes. After hearing how upset you were that I gave the don position to Gio, I had my doubts,” I answer with regret.

James leans his head back against the seat when his eyes suddenly widen. “Hannah! She was going to stop by your place to see Ginger,” he says with panic in his voice.
