Chapter Eleven

I was midway through miming myself out of a box on Sunday morning when I heard a distinctly non-Dominic knock. Mom slowly opened my bedroom door and poked her head around the corner.

“Mimi? Can we talk for a minute?”

I dipped into an elaborate bow, gesturing toward my bed. Welcome. Come in.

Mom walked over and sat down.

“Honey, I couldn’t help but notice when I was mailing your invitations . . .”

“Yes?”

Her fingers picked at the edge of the duvet.

“That . . . That you wrote one for your dad.”

I froze. I focused on keeping my voice steady.

“Well, yeah! Of course!”

She looked at me for a moment before speaking slowly.

“Well, I mean, it’s nice of you to invite him, and to think of him, but—”

I was growing frustrated. How could she look through my invitations without my permission?

“He’s not just invited. He’s the guest of honor!”

“He’s—” She looked surprised.

“The show is for him, really,” I blurted.

I ran my nails across the rough part of my cast like a xylophone while I waited for her to answer.

She spoke slowly. “Mimi, I need to—”

Suddenly words spilled out of me without control. “Maybe you’re just jealous because he didn’t let you know where he was going!”

“Mimi!” Mom looked at me, shocked.

“But I know. And this performance is for him! And he’s going to come to it and he’s going to love it!”

I couldn’t admit to her that I would be leaving with him afterward. Mom would find out soon enough. She cleared her throat.

“Mimi, I saw how you addressed the invitation and—”

“I can’t talk anymore! I’m busy rehearsing for my show.”

I sped out of my room, shutting my bedroom door behind me. How dare she think I wouldn’t invite him? Dominic stood on the stairs in front of me, looking bewildered. He shook his head.

“Really, Mimi?”

My face burned in embarrassment.

“Move, Dominic!” My voice shook and I pushed past him.

He burst out laughing as I continued down the stairs.

Dominic’s laughter pinged around my head like a mimed badminton rally as I ran through the house, out the back door, and on to the porch steps. A lump was rising in my throat. Tears poured out as I sat down and put my face in my hands. Suddenly, I was back at school on that extra-ordinary day in March, standing in my classroom.
