* * *

Nicole was mixing buttercream frosting when Liam came into the kitchen, and after glancing around to see if they were alone, he leaned in for a kiss. It was a quick, sweet kiss but one that made her lips tingle and lovely memories and new ideas dance in her head.

Ideas that had the potential to change her future plans.

She dipped a spoon into the frosting and held it out to him. “Taste test. I’m trying out a new recipe with a secret ingredient.”

Instead of licking the spoon, he brushed it against her mouth and then kissed her, swirling his tongue across her lips, giving her a lovely full body shiver.

He sucked lightly on her bottom lip before ending the kiss. “Delicious.”

She was tempted to sigh like an infatuated young girl rather than the thirty-seven-year-old woman that she was.

He swiped his tongue across the back of the spoon. “What is the secret ingredient?”

“You’ll have to guess. What did you come in here for? Do you have an order to place?” she asked.

“Nope. No order. Just a question. On Saturday, I need to go to San Antonio for a writer’s conference. I have to take story pitches for a couple of hours and meet with a few people. If you think Amy and the others can handle the kitchen for the day, I’m hoping you will come with me.”

Her belly gave a little swoop as if she was on a roller coaster. “I’d love to go. We will just be gone for the day?”

“Yes. We’ll have to leave really early, but that shouldn’t be a struggle since you are used to baker’s hours.”

“I can definitely handle early.” While they talked, she began frosting maple pecan cupcakes.

“It will probably be bedtime before we get home.”

“I can do enough prep in the kitchen that it should be fine.”

“I’ll make sure I have enough people scheduled to work on Saturday, and I guess the kids can stay with their grandmothers.”

“Or just run back and forth between both houses like we did. It’s very handy to have our mothers living next door to one another.”

“It sure is. I’m glad you’re going with me.” He put the spoon in the sink. “I’m headed to the bank, but I’ll be back soon.”

“See you later.” As soon as he was out of the kitchen, she turned up the volume on the music and did a little dance with her arms in the air and her hips swaying. They would have a whole day away from work and all the eyes and ears of their small town where almost everyone knew both of their histories.

Asking her to put the bistro in the hands of other people meant he really wanted her to go with him. She would have gone no matter where he’d wanted to take her, but a writer’s conference had the added benefit of helping her on her newest venture into the world of publishing. If she was going to do something, she was going to do it to the best of her ability.
