* * *

Isaac watched as Savannah hurried across the park. He grabbed his belongings and followed, keeping her in his sight. She shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a car in her frame of mind. The last thing she needed was to be in an accident.

He thought of how he’d put her in this position. She’d told him how much it hurt to be around children. That was why he’d decided to give her some space so she could deal with the feelings she’d dredged up today. He hadn’t let one full day pass before approaching her. True, he hadn’t expected to run into her tonight and he could have sauntered off before she’d seen him.

But he hadn’t. Instead, he’d stood there, staring at her, taking her in from head to toe. She’d looked just as beautiful as she’d been that morning. She’d changed out of the jeans she’d worn earlier and was wearing a colorful dress that floated around her ankles. Her curly hair was free and drifted around her shoulders.

He’d been mesmerized and powerless to look away. He’d been so quiet that she hadn’t known he was there. When Mia had become bored, shaken her rattle and babbled at him, the jig was up.

When Savannah had turned to look at them, he’d been spellbound by her beauty. Captivated by the light in her eyes and the delighted smile on her face. Nothing in the world could have convinced him to stick with his original plan to keep his distance.

Things had been going well until he’d touched her. Once he’d held her in his arms, all of his best intentions had gone up in flames—as had he. There was no way they would part without kissing.

He shook his head in an attempt to rid himself of the images of them together. Right now, Savannah was upset. Hurt. Because of him.

Isaac placed Mia in her car seat, loaded the stroller, then got in behind the wheel. There was no way he would be able to rest tonight until he knew that Savannah had made it home safely. At this time of night, there was very little traffic, so he didn’t worry about her colliding with another vehicle. But there was plenty of wildlife that could cross the highway at the wrong time. Every once in a while, there had been accidents or near misses with deer crossing the road.

“We’re going by Savannah’s,” Isaac said to Mia, who only looked at him as she gnawed on her pacifier. “I’m glad you have no complaints. And it would be good if you decided to sleep at night again.”

She laughed.

Isaac game-planned as he drove. He would check to ensure that Savannah’s car was in the driveway. After all, his concern was her getting home safely.

When he reached the cabin and saw her parked car, he intended to drive away. Then he’d seen a lamp burning in the front window. She was awake.

Was she still upset? Crying? The idea tore his heart and he knew he couldn’t drive home without knowing whether she was still distressed.
