CHAPTER TWO

JAMIE NEARLY FELL off her heels. “Lunch?”

“I’m not flying back until later tomorrow,” he continued. “I was hoping we could talk first.”

Ever since she’d learned Whit was also in the wedding, she’d been imagining their reunion, and the cool, disinterested way she would regard him. Going to lunch was not part of the plan.

She shook her head. “I don’t think…”

“Or breakfast,” he quickly added. “Whatever is more convenient for you.”

A shiver decidedly didn’t pass down her spine as Jamie studied her former boyfriend. This was the moment she tossed her ponytail and left him wanting more.

She rose on her front foot, ready to spin around. Whit stood in his dark suit, drink untouched, with a look of—was it nervous?—expectancy on his face. As though her acceptance really meant something to him. Jamie hadn’t counted on sincerity.

“Mornings are my best writing time,” she heard herself saying. “I don’t go anywhere until after one.”

“Then lunch it is. I’m staying at the Mandarin Oriental. Why don’t we meet at the restaurant at, say, one thirty?”

When he smiled, it was as if he hadn’t aged a bit. The same boyish sparkle that had always made him so irresistible lit up his eyes. The shiver that didn’t run down Jamie’s spine earlier, didn’t run down it again.

“One thirty will be fine.”

“Fantastic. I’ll see you tomorrow, then. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Yeah,” Jamie replied. “Me too.” She swore her mouth had a mind of its own.

In a perfect display of irony, it was Whit who then turned and walked away, leaving Jamie standing there wondering what she’d done.

* * *

“You what?” Grabbing her by the hand, Keisha dragged Jamie into the Spanish cloister. Since the party was ending, the enclave was empty. “What happened to ‘He’s in the past; I’m over him’?”

“He is. I am,” Jamie replied. Her feet hurt more than ever. There was an antique chair in the corner of the room, and she wondered if security would be angry at her sitting down on an exhibit. “We’re only having lunch. You make it sound like he asked me to go away for the weekend.”

“Well, you are meeting at a hotel.”

“To reminisce and catch up, that’s all.” Jamie fought to keep from rolling her eyes. She had absolutely zero intention of doing anything more. “Frankly, I’m insulted you think I’m that weak.”

Her friend folded her arms. “Seriously? Have you forgotten how quickly you tumbled into bed with him the first time?”

“No, I haven’t forgotten,” Jamie snapped. They’d slept together the very first night. She, the good girl who had only slept with one other person before Whit. “That was also seven years ago. A lot has changed since then.” For starters, she wasn’t a starry-eyed student who jumped into things heart first anymore. She was smarter, more pragmatic about her relationships. About life in general, in fact.

“What makes you think Whit is interested in anything beyond talking anyway? For all we know he’s got a girlfriend back in New York.” Some beautiful woman with an equally old monied name as his.
