QUINT STOOD IN front of Marshal Hamlin, daring the man to make a move. They’d gotten what they needed to move forward with their investigation. This dog-and-pony show was no longer any use to them. And after the way they’d been treated so far, he wasn’t particularly interested in playing nice-nice.

Ree stood beside him, her fingers dancing across the screen of her phone at a record pace. She would most likely be requesting assistance from Bjorn. The concerned wrinkle in her forehead was meant for him. He’d bet money on the fact she wasn’t stressed about whether or not he could remove the smug look from Hamlin’s face. The wrinkle had appeared the minute she heard the one name that would skyrocket Quint’s blood pressure—Dumitru.

Vadik was close to the source. He worked out of Dallas. Giselle could get Quint and Ree inside the man’s apartment. Done deal. There was no reason for Quint to hang around. He didn’t care about Officer Barns, except to say he had been unlucky. He wouldn’t have an out like Axel. Even then, he was going to have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his natural life. Axel knew it. Ree knew it. Quint knew it.

But what choice did the man have? He could go down for a crime he didn’t commit and very likely be sentenced to death. Or he could give up information, grab his family and go into Witness Protection for the rest of his life. And it would be a lifelong commitment to their new identities. Tough going considering he had a typical teenager who would have too much access to social media. One slip and she could give away their location. It was clear to anyone paying attention that Axel Ivan loved his family above all else.

If Axel committed himself to whatever new identity he and his family would receive they would have a real shot in life, a second chance to get it right and live on the good side of the law. Quint wished the man luck in his new life.

“Step aside or your boss will get a call from ours.” Ree hoisted the text message up to Hamlin’s face, stopping within an inch of the screen smacking him right in the nose.

He blinked and took a quick step backward. Quint couldn’t wipe the smirk off his face. Ree was a force to be reckoned with and she backed down from no one when she was in the right. Quint almost laughed because she didn’t relent when she wasn’t right, either. His partner had a stubborn streak a mile long.

Hamlin glanced at the screen before swatting it away and stepping aside. “Be my guest.”

“Your hospitality has been much appreciated,” Quint said, not bothering to hide his sarcasm. “I’ll be sure to request to work with you again real soon on another case.”

“Door’s tricky,” Hamlin said. “Sometimes it can hit you right in the backside as you exit. I’d be careful if I was you.
