CHAPTER EIGHT

Ava rested her cheek on Dylan’s shoulder as she listened to the rain. The drumbeat against the windows no longer seemed gloomy but cozy. The unease she’d experienced earlier would eventually return, but for now she felt lazy and content, with no greater ambition than to snuggle under the covers with an old lover. “It’s still coming down hard out there,” she murmured.

His arm tightened around her. “We’ll be okay. But I need to get up and take another look around the property. I still have a job to do.”

“Give me a minute and I’ll come with you. I’m too comfortable to move right now.”

He dropped a kiss in her hair. “Stay put. I’ll make the rounds.”

“We’re supposed to watch out for each other, remember? I was serious about that.”

“I know you were. But there’s no point in both of us going out in this weather. Someone needs to keep an eye on things inside.”

Ava teased circles on his chest with her fingertip. “What do you think the others are doing right now?”

“Staying out of trouble, I hope. I’m counting on the rain to keep everyone inside for the rest of the day.”

“There’s no one here besides our group. Blair said the staff left as soon as the flooding started.”

“My concern is that someone arrived before the roads became impassable and now they’re trapped here with us.”

“All the more reason we need to stick together.” Ava slipped from the crook of his arm and rolled to her back as disquiet returned. “Why do you think Tony left so suddenly? What could have been so urgent that he’d leave Blair here after everything that’s happened? Do you think she told him about the doll?”

“Could we not talk about this right now?” He propped his hands behind his head as he stared at the ceiling. “Blair is still my client. I need to discuss certain things with her before I keep talking to you about it.”

“You didn’t have a problem earlier with our discussion.”

“Ava.”

“Okay, I get it.” She tried not to take his rebuff personally. She knew about privilege and professional responsibility. In Dylan’s place, she would be just as hesitant and wary. But the subtle distance he had created stung a little, which made no sense. Wasn’t this what she wanted? No strings, no complications, a one-time-only thing? Normally she was the one throwing up barriers as she gathered her clothes and headed for the door. Served her right, she supposed, that Dylan was giving her a taste of her own medicine.

“Can I say just one more thing?”

He slanted her a cautious glance. “What is it?”

She slid her hand over his and squeezed. “It’s not lost on me what you did today. The risk you took. You could have been killed trying to save my life.”

“But I wasn’t. We’re both fine. Relatively speaking.” His gaze slipped over her scrapes and bruises. “You would have done the same for me.”

“I would have tried, but we both know I could never have climbed down that canyon wall.
