CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Watching Bella convince her family that they couldn’t come with her, Marco and Carlos was like watching a master class in persuasion. She managed to shift paternal and maternal worry enough so that they now believed they’d help more by staying away. Though maybe it did help that her father seemed to genuinely trust Marco.

Grant had pulled him aside before they left with Carlos and had quietly told him in no uncertain terms that he protected her the first time and he expected even better results the second time around. If there was a second time. He was of the same thought with Marco that the masked man, if he had any sense, was long gone from Kelby Creek. Or at least in such deep hiding that he wasn’t going to chance another attempt at getting her.

“You told me your story,” Grant had added. “I know your résumé from your last job now. Which means I know you’re good. I need you to stay good. You hear me?”

“I hear you.”

Now Bella was standing on the front porch of her own home, peeking in through the windows, trying to figure out if it was safe for her to come in. At all times Marco kept his eyes on her while moving from room to room at the front part of the house while Carlos swept everything else.

It was then, standing on a rug that had more personality than most people Marco had met, that he started to suspect not only did he like Deputy Park but he was also starting to trust him.

“Unless you have some kind of hidden compartment or underground bunker, there’s no one in this house but us,” Carlos concluded when they all converged on the front porch again.

The tension that had been building in Bella’s shoulders on the ride over lessened but didn’t entirely drop.

“All right,” she said, turning to Marco with nothing but focus. “Let’s see if I can’t super-sleuth us a clue.”

Marco trailed behind Bella while Carlos stayed outside. They went from room to room, as she inspected everything in silence. Marco was almost ashamed to say his attention kept splitting from the woman to what the woman had built around her.

Before then Marco had formed an opinion about Bella Greene. If he’d been asked about what she was like before entering her home, he would’ve said that the one word he would use to describe her was surprising. Then he would have probably followed that up with loud, but not loud in a bad way. She knew what she wanted, she said what she wanted and she wouldn’t stand by and let someone else tell her what she wanted. After spending time at her family’s home the night before, Marco would’ve added that he believed that Bella fiercely loved her family, just as they fiercely loved her back. But going through her home? Marco found a new word to describe the woman.

Warm.

It wasn’t a poetic description, and it certainly wasn’t original, but the more he saw of her private life, the more he felt warm just by being there.
