Thirty-Three

Harlow

We begin our journey back to civilisation early, before the sun has even risen. Dev and Sev carry everything we need in fur bags strung over their shoulders. They also have enough blades to kill an army, even spears too. Dev slips me a small blade, and I keep it in my hand. I know the forest isn’t safe, and this only heightens my fear. My head swings in every direction while I walk, looking for anything unusual besides the normal stuff you might find in an alien forest.

Sev is in front of me, Dev is following me, and Kitty is walking next to me. I don’t know what will happen to him when we get there, but there was no way was I leaving him behind. Plus, I don’t think he would have let me. I reach down and stroke through his fur, letting his purr settle my fear slightly as he rubs protectively along my side. Anything or anyone wanting to hurt me has to get through two giant aliens and a fucking alien tiger, I’m liking my odds.

The farther we trek into the jungle, the more obvious the alien-ness of this world becomes. The trees are taller and wider, and some turn weird colours. I accidentally touch one as I pass, and it lights up blue.

Fucking blue.

The ground changes from hard to soft. We pass flowers of all shapes and sizes. One giant yellow one is eating what looks like a small mammal, its tail sticking out from its mouth of petals, and a squeal of horror fills the air. Dev quickly pushes me on with a stern warning not to touch. Because my first thought was to touch the killer flower.

Like I said, alien as hell out here.

I half expect a fucking dinosaur to come wandering out to try and eat it… Shit, if it does, I’m so going to try and keep it as a pet.

The suns fill the sky, and where it can break through the canopy, it heats me. Sweat beads on my brow and slips down my spine as I trudge on. As the hours pass, my pace slows, my little legs unable to keep up with my aliens’ massive ones. I know I’m slowing them down, and I try to speed back up, thinking of what could be happening to my sisters right now for motivation. It only lasts another hour, but then I’m panting and my lungs are screaming at me. My body is coated in sweat, and each step is a herculean effort, my legs twinging in agony.

Elon, we need to take a break, Dev declares mentally.

I nearly cry in relief when I should be protesting. We have to get back to save them, but if I don’t rest, I might pass out.

Sure, I could rest, I add calmly, not at all like I’m dying, even though each breath sounds like a train fucked an asthmatic donkey.

Sev glances back, notices me, and nods, leading us over to a small patch under a tree.
