Chapter Twenty-Two

Angel

The Church doors close behind Hammer and I release a sigh.

“Come on,” Duchess claps behind me, “quit staring at those damn doors and talk to me. I need to know.”

I turn and give her a lazy smile. “Know what?”

Duchess squeals, “You’re an Old Lady for real! How do you feel? How’d it happen? Spill!”

I explain how Hammer basically ambushed me with the news of being his Old Lady. How, according to him, I had no choice in the matter, but also that I really didn’t care. I wasn’t going to fight him on this. Being officially his was a long time coming, at least from my point of view.

“Why the name ‘Angel’?”

“That should be totally obvious.” I laugh. “It’s because I’m perfect.”

Duchess playfully punches me in the arm. “Quit being a jokester and tell me the truth.”

I smile, remembering what he said to me. “He said it was because I’m his angel. I saved him from being alone.”

“Awww,” she swoons. “He does have a romantic side under all those muscles and broody stares.”

“He does.” I smile.

Duchess loops her arm through mine and we head out back. “Did you get lucky last night?”

“Of course, I did.”

That sends us into a fit of giggles. We sit at one of the picnic tables under the back porch’s overhang and take in the quietness. There are a few other people up and around, but no one else is back here.

“How crazy is this, that we both ended up here? Who would’ve thought?” I rest my elbows on the table.

“Not me, that’s for sure. I had zero intentions of ever coming here.” Duchess rubs her belly. “But look at me now.”

“I think I had a stroke when I got out of that cruiser and saw you standing there. You being here never even crossed my mind.”

“Can I ask a kinda serious question?” Duchess looks a little sad, so I reach for her hands.

“Of course.”

“Why did you move here and decide to be a club girl?”

Definitely not what I was expecting she’d ask but still an understandable question. She’s asked a few times since I’ve been back, but I kept brushing it off.

“Our parents dying was my fault,” I whisper, looking down.

“No!” Duchess pulls on my hands, so I look up. “That wasn’t your fault. It was a freak thing.”

“It was my fault. I was the one who wanted a sleepover with Lacey. Had we not been away from home, we could’ve saved them.” I pull my hands away and stand up. “Mom and Dad are dead because of me.”

“That’s bullshit and you know it,” Duchess shouts. “If we would’ve been home, we probably would’ve died too. Shitty thing about carbon monoxide, it’s undetectable without an alarm. There’s no way any of us would’ve woken up.”

“It doesn’t matter. One of us could’ve woken up for one reason or another and checked on them. I could’ve seen they weren’t waking up and called for help. I could’ve—”

“No, Tempy.” Duchess somehow manages to get to her feet in a flash, “We’d be dead too.
