Trip Number 3

“He was bit. There was a huge hole in the side of his face. I could see the teeth marks. He was hysterical, irrational. I tried to get him to calm down and tell me what was going on. He said something about his wife and being attacked. I wanted to help him, but then, his eyes changed. Right in front of me. He lunged toward me. I had to shoot him.

“I followed his trail, back up the road a ways. Sure enough, there was a horde of them, all military. Either one of those things got the jump on one of them, or one was infected and spread it to the others. No telling.

“I tried to get her attention, tell her to stay in the car but I couldn't. If I had shouted out to her, they would have heard me. They had the car surrounded. I saw that the car was jacked up and the spare tire was in the road. They must have rushed him while he was changing a flat. ”

“What took you so long to get back?”

“I waited. Remember when I told you, where there's military, there's gasoline? I found it. While they were busy feeding or whatever it is they do, I found a cache nearby. Twenty barrels. They're not going to need it anymore. I'm going to stash it nearby and siphon what we need when we need it.”

“What about the woman?”

“What about her? She saw me. I know she did. I mouthed the words 'Stay there' to her but she didn't. She saw me and jumped out of the car. I shook my head. She was looking right at me, but it was too late. The soldiers devoured her.

“I think they were trying to use the snow to get away. They had no idea what was waiting for them in the storm. “

No one spoke of the man Donald had shot after that.
