At the end of May, my mother insisted on visiting. I tried to put her off, but Iâd been doing so for two months already and hadnât gone home for Easter, and she threatened to stop paying for my room at the pensión. âYou either see me there or you see me here, Tomás,â she said with unusual authority, and I told her Iâd see her here.
Among the complications it raised was that I knew sheâd also want to see the Colonel. I hadnât seen him myself since starting at Automotores. Partly I was avoiding it, afraid of revealing my state or making a slip in conversation. But partly it was his doing. No calls or invitations, only a postcard from Rio de Janeiro of the open-armed Christ Redeemer statue overlooking the city that read: Churchman beating freethinker here too, alas. It was dated May 24, and I hadnât heard from him since.
But when I phoned, Mercedes picked up like nothing was the matter, saying simply that itâd been too long since Iâd been in touch and going to get the Colonel.
âWhy, if it isnât Señor Shore,â he said. âAnd here I feared youâd died.â
âYou feared Iâdââ
âKidding, Tomasito!â he exclaimed. âJoder. To what do I owe the pleasure?â
âMy motherâs coming to town,â I answered stiffly.
âWell, why so grim about that? Weâd love to host her, of course.â
âSheâs going to stay at a hotelâshe insists,â I added honestly. My mother wasnât the type to impose, except occasionally upon me. âWeâll make a dinner date. Itâs just that sheâshe doesnât know about what Iâm doing, my job,â I faltered. âIâd appreciate it ifââ
âOf course, Tomasito. You know I donât like to worry your mother. Your secretâs safe with me.â He said it with such ease it threw me, and before I could thank him and hang up, he added, âHow is it working out for you, by the way? That secret.â
I looked around the common area. A business student from Lima sat at the dining table, engrossed in a textbook. A kettle was whistling loudly from the kitchen.
âAnÃbal said to tell you he was impressed with me.â
âOh, did he? How nice. Especially for AnÃbal. And do you feel youâre getting what you wanted out of it?â
âGetting what I . . . ?â
âYou know, learning, worldly experience and the like. Didnât you say you wanted more than money out of it?â
I breathed. Switched the receiver to the other ear to give myself more time, but I still couldnât answer. If the Colonel knew why Iâd wanted to work at Automotores, I assured myself, he wouldnât have gotten me the job.
âOf course, we donât have to talk about it if you donât want,â he said at length. âEspecially not on the phone! I should know better, shouldnât I? Iâll let you be off. Just donât forget, if you change your mind: I can always keep your secrets safe, Tomás.â
