Cameron’s taxi drew up outside the compound in a crowded suburb of the city. Surrounded at a distance by a mix of residential and commercial estates, the data centre was an unassuming dark brick building, smaller than she had expected. She settled the charge on the autocar’s meter and stepped out into the sunshine. The wide area around the building was landscaped, looking more like a small city park, with grassy dips and contours, bushes and flower beds. Cameron wasn’t fooled. She spotted two drones floating discreetly in the air, and high spec cameras on the building itself. The small access gate which blocked her path through the garden was locked, and Cameron pressed the call button. Her appointment had been booked by Holly earlier in the week; she was expected.

“Chipped?” came a voice.

“Uh… yes,” replied Cameron.

“Please present your chip to the sensor.”

Cameron did as she was told, extending her hand to the pad on the gate frame.

A light glowed green and the voice said, “Thank you, Ms Silvera. Please come in.”

The gate popped open. Cameron walked briskly towards the building’s main entrance. Cameras tracked her progress, and from the gatehouse a guard watched her arrival. There was another pad on the main door that lit up when it sensed the chip embedded in her hand. The door opened, and Cameron stepped into the hallway. It seemed dim after the bright sun outside, and it took a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the soft lighting.

“Good afternoon, Ms Silvera,” said the uniformed guard. “Let’s run you through security, please?” He slid a reader across the counter and Cameron pressed her thumb to it. There was a brief pause while the thumbprint was reconciled to the data chip, and the guard nodded. “Thank you. Now, your bag?”

“I won’t need it.” Cameron went to hand the bag straight over the counter, but the guard stopped her.

“I need to check it through x-ray, even if you leave it here in the secure storage,” he explained. “Just pop it on the conveyor and empty your pockets, please.”

Cameron did as she was asked, smiling to herself. It was always good to test security procedures to the full, and so far, the data centre was playing it by the book. She passed through the body scanner without incident, retrieved her pocket screen, and settled down in a small waiting room. A few minutes later a member of staff peered around the door.

“Watling Automotive? You’ll be Cameron, right?”

Cameron opened her mouth to reply, but the young man continued without a pause. “I’m Jeremy. Follow me.”

Brusque, thought Cameron. Very sure of himself. She stood up meekly and trailed behind Jeremy as he navigated the labyrinthine corridors of the data centre. They arrived at the door to a well-appointed meeting room with large wall screens, and he gestured to her to sit.

“Now, how can I help you?” he asked.

“Let’s start by bringing up the server records for Watling Automotive, please,” said Cameron clearly. “Access and maintenance schedules. Power consumption charts.
