‘I’ve arranged for someone to pick you up tomorrow morning, okay?’ Forrester was leaning across the passenger seat. ‘If you need anything, give me a call. Okay?’ He held out her keys. ‘I’m meeting a boy from Carnoustie who’s giving me a lift back.’

‘Thanks, sir.’ Vicky slammed the door and got out. She waved him off, his footsteps slicing through the icy darkness.

The street was quiet, but at least there were lights on in her home.

Not many times in the last few years she’d been home this early. Usually a lot later.

Vicky traipsed up to the house. Almost went over again. She stopped on the top step and blew air up her face.

Why did she feel so tired?

Her mobile thrummed in her pocket.
