Meditating While Walking
With walking, we have experienced our bodies a little differently than when we are sitting or lying down during meditation. Bringing our attention to our feet and using that contact between each of our feet and the ground, we can imagine it as if we are giving kisses to the world each time we step down.
When the mind wanders off while we are walking and meditating, it is no different from it is with any other meditation practice. As long as we take note of where it went and get it back into the moment, we can continue the harmony with our breathing and our steps. Take slow strides when you are walking, and you will notice more about nature and things around you.
Walking meditation can be done at different speeds because, the same way life can throw us in another direction, our minds will assist us with the transition from mindful walking into mindful running, and that can be a very helpful tool in the practice of meditation.
You can begin by standing still, bringing awareness to your body as a whole, and realize those impulses in the mind that are going to initiate the process of walking by lifting one foot, so we become aware of each time we lift each foot.
Now you will get the actual impulse to finally take that first step forward, which will now begin to bring us into touch with the full aspect of each sensation that we experience in our bodies that are connected with walking, lifting the heel of the foot, and the actual swinging of your leg as it is being moved forward.
Coordinating all this with our breathing while being able to observe each breath as our body moves is essential to mastering this practice. While being mindful, a useful way to coordinate this is that you can breathe in like the back of your heel raises off of the ground and breathe out each time it touches down.
Now I want you to think of what you are going to be doing with your hands during this time. You just need to be aware of the fact that they are hanging down on the side of your body and let them rest right where they are.
There is never just one specific way to accomplish these practices. You can experiment with what feels right for you and the way that you live. There is no right or wrong way; it is all about practicing, being consistent, and finding what is comfortable for you while you are walking.
