WHAT ARE WE CAPABLE OF?
When I take myself out of a race God has called me to, itâs usually because Iâm picturing running without him. God is capable of doing so much more than we think is possible. Without Godâs perspective, we will decide what we can and canât do based on our own strength. This flies in the face of Ephesians 3:20, which says that God âis able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within usâ (ESV).
In other words, what he has planned is better.
Iâm a goal setter to the nth degree. I love dreaming and making plans, but even I canât dream up plans that come close to what God has in mind. No matter how big of a dreamer you are, God is bigger. Does that mean that if you dream of four kids, God is dreaming of eleven, or if you dream of making $50,000 a year, he is dreaming of $100,000? Not necessarily. Bigger isnât always measured the way we think, but itâs always greater.
I love how God paints the picture of doing something greater in the life of Moses. God called him to do somethingâyou know, confront Pharaoh and lead two million or so grumblers and complainers through the desertâand he responded with a laundry list of excuses, including a fear thatâs near and dear to one of my own: âO Lord, Iâm not very good with words. I never have been, and Iâm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangledâ (Exodus 4:10). As someone who is equally terrified of speaking in front of people, Iâm grateful for the Lordâs response to Moses. Despite Mosesâ excuses, God was gracious and sent Mosesâ eloquent brother, Aaron, with him. This story reminds me of a few things when it comes to Godâs dreams for us:
God has a great desire for us to be a part of his plan. Can he do it without us? Yes! Does he long to use us anyway? Yes! We can make excuses, but God will still pursue us.
We donât accomplish Godâs purposes alone. Mosesâ weakness meant that both he and Aaron got to be part of the story. Shake off the feeling that God expects you to do it all. Maybe God is surrounding you with some of his other kids so they can use their gifts and so you can carry out the mission together.
He equips each of us differently. Your calling from God might look very different from your friendâs or your neighborâs or your sisterâs. Maybe your gift is in leading Bible studies or volunteering for outreaches or cooking meals or organizing details behind the scenes. Moses had the words, while Aaron was the good talker. Each gift is equally important in Godâs eyes.
When God says weâre the ones for the job, we have to banish the idea that someone else would be a better fit.
