Maybe I shouldn’t have changed. Wearing my work clothes would keep up a professional illusion, so I can tell myself this is just work. Then if something happens at his place, it’s not my fault…

I get up off the couch and take the stairs down, not wanting to wait for the rickety elevator. An olive-green car is waiting outside. I’m no good with cars, but even I recognize the hood ornament. He’s sent a Rolls Royce for me. Standing straight-backed by it is an older man in a trim black suit, his salt and pepper beard perfectly maintained. He’s got clever eyes and a sort of decorum to him, the kind of man who could fit into a dive bar or an opera house.

“Miss Cromwell,” he says, smooth. He opens the back door to the leather seats, and I pull myself in with a murmured thank you. I sit back, trying to get comfortable, but I’ve got the distinct feeling I’ve been put on an escalator that’s pulling me towards Ragar, and that no matter what I do, I’ll end up alone with him.

“Where does Mr. Parks live?”

“His residence is in the Hills, ma’am.”

The Hills. Thirty minutes out of town, up in the heights where the richest people live above us. Layla’s parents have a home there. I’m lucky she threw a fit at a young age, demanding she didn’t get put into Prim Academy where most of the city’s uber-wealthy send their children. Her father’s never been able to deny her when she’s crying, and so I got to meet her even though we both came from different social spheres.

I think of texting her and telling her where I’m going. She’s going to find out soon enough—but if I tell her, it will all be too real.

It’s like driving in a big pillow. We go over streets that I know have potholes, but the ride is smooth as the chauffeur’s voice as we pull out of the city and climb into the Hills. Houses become mansions, and mansions become estates as we drive up tree-lined streets, winding upwards. I look to my right to the city, the hustle and bustle so removed.

The chauffeur stops the car in front of a big, serious-looking set of gates next to an empty guard post. He scans a card, and the gates shudder open. I file that piece of information—Ragar is so private, he doesn’t allow security on the property.

My mouth drops as we crawl up the driveway. Layla’s parents are rich, but this is another level. Huge, centuries-old palm trees line the driveway up to the mansion which towers over the property. It’s four stories, and it could house a small village.

“Wow,” I mouth to myself. The entire mansion is white and gleaming, glass walls and windows both unashamed yet private, hidden behind huge walls and trees, with no other houses nearby. You could stand naked in front of one of his big windows and no one would see you.

I catch a glimpse of a helicopter on the roof near a giant jacuzzi before we pull in tighter.
