Twenty-Four

The sun was sinking, reminding me of our early morning walk, complete with shadows creeping across the path.

This time of day, however, there were plenty of people out and about. Kids played soccer in the street. Adults were mowing lawns filled with fall leaves. Doorways and yards were decorated for Halloween.

“Where are we going?” I tried to sound casual. Ghost wanted down but I kept her close, fearing an attack.

“To a place with the equipment we need.” Killion’s long legs ate up the sidewalk and I had to hurry to keep the pace. Those who noticed us moved out of the way. “You need to learn how to use your weapon properly.”

I felt pretty sure the scythe had its own ideas about that. “Do the grims have a boss?” Couldn’t hurt to feel him out about Death. See what he could tell me about him. “I know SMG is in charge of the overall, uh, business of death, but is there someone I have to report to for assignments?”

“You’ve already met.”

How did he know?

He glanced at me from the corner of his eye as we rounded the corner onto Fayette Street. “You stink of him.”

I lifted an arm to sniff my pit. I didn’t smell fresh, but I couldn’t discern any noticeable fragrance of my earlier visitor. I sighed. “He just barged in. You could’ve warned me about him, you know.”

“No fun in that.”

Was Mr. Stoic making another joke? Ghost wiggled in my arms, straining toward him. She was such a traitor. “Thanks for leaving me unprepared. Waking up to the sight of him watching me sleep took ten years off my life.”

“I hope the deal you made with him is worth it.”

“Reading my mind again? Boundaries, dude.” A trace of jealousy had laced his tone. That gave me pause. Not that it was any of his business, but… “My landlady was supposed to die in a few days. I bought her more time.”

“In exchange for what?”

We neared the alley where I’d taken out Gustafson. A shiver ran through me. Should I tell him or not? I stewed, glancing down the alley. “Did you know him? Avi?”

Killion, already past the entrance, halted with his back to me. “No.”

“But he was a vampire, like you.”

“We didn’t run in the same circles.”

Okay, then. In a small town such as ours, how were there enough supernaturals—particularly the undead variety—to form multiple circles? “You’re sure he was the leader of the rogue reapers?”

Killion pivoted and doubled back to me. “Evidence suggests so.” His head cocked ever so slightly. “Why?”

My favorite question right now. “Death wants me to look into it.” I observed his face carefully to catch any reaction. “See if there may have been someone else in charge.” The half-truth might tip him off, but also potentially put pressure on him. That could work in my favor.

The corner of his mouth quirked. “He asked you to investigate it, didn’t he?”

“Don’t look so amused. Is that hard to believe? That he thinks I have the skills?”

He gave a light tug to my jacket sleeve.
