Chapter 23

“What happened?” I asked when she got off the phone.

“The white Equinox was parked to the left of the Starbucks drive-through so I got in the line and ordered a java mocha latte. While I waited for my order, I took a handful of photos of the car and the license. Perfect. Couldn’t have gone any smoother. I emailed them to Mr. Williams as soon as I left Starbucks and pulled into the Circle K lot. Then I drove back to the office, and that’s when I got his message. He has connections with the Arizona Department of Transportation and someone ran the plate for him. Turns out it was stolen off of a Mazda in Goodyear.”

“Goodyear. That’s not far from Verrado. Maybe the thief or thieves is working out of there. So now what?”

“Mr. Williams will try to make the buy again. Only this time with those deputies. I’ve been back and forth with calls to Ranston. Bowman took the day off for some dental work. Didn’t need to hear the details.”

“I don’t understand. I thought the HOA didn’t want to involve the sheriff’s office.”

“They don’t, but the operation won’t take place in Verrado and should be pretty low-key. Mr. Williams said, and I quote, ‘We can’t afford to dilly around with stolen license plates when we’ve got a flesh-and-blood suspect right under our noses. Might as well have the MCSO deputies nab him.’”

“Who’s going to make the buy? I mean, transaction?”

“That’s what we were talking about when you walked in. One look at Bowman and Ranston and the seller will bolt out of there like his pants are on fire. And I say he because the person driving the car was a man. No one else in the car. Got a good photo of him through the window.”

“What did Nate say? Is he going to meet with the guy? Or is Marshall?”

“Here’s where it gets interesting. According to Mr. Williams, Bowman and Ranston are up to their noses with Cosmo Pruett’s murder, and since they haven’t officially been asked to investigate the Verrado thefts, they said they’ll help us out but they, in turn, will need some assistance with their little old homicide case once things get sorted out in Verrado.”

“What kind of help? Please don’t tell me it’s interviews. Nate and Marshall will cringe.”

“Nope. They’re looking into Cosmo’s social life. Not just his dating social life, but all that other stuff that goes on in Sun City West. The clubs, the contests, you name it.”

“I think I understand. To be honest, I’m taking the same approach. Well, similar. I’m dying to show you my murder map but it’s now ten after nine and I need to get to work. Maybe at break time.”

“Sounds good to me. Meanwhile, I’ve got to pull up Craigslist again and offer to buy those earrings if they haven’t already been sold. This time I’m using a real description of Mr. Williams’s car. He wants to do it ASAP so I’ve got to get a move on.
