Chapter 11

Hilde seemed to blur for a split second, then a massive wolf-like beast the size of a pony stood in her place. And Grey became a sabre-toothed creature that matched her in height and bulk. Jesse should have been terrified, thrown off balance by the sudden strangeness, but he wasn't.

Morgan reached over his shoulder and drew a sword from a scabbard that must have been hanging at his back. The long blade gleamed in what little light seeped up from the village.

"A triad, is it?" he drawled. "I don't think so. The only weapons you have are a stick and Greymalkin. Not nearly enough."

"Are you sure about that?" Will stepped sideways, closer to the big cat and away from Jesse. Morgan turned a little to face them, obviously assuming Will and the cat to be the greater threat, and thrust at him. Will parried the strike with his baton. Metal rang on metal, and at the same time Hilde leaped for Greymalkin. Jesse saw his chance and charged forward in a diving tackle. He rammed his shoulder into Morgan's hip, wrapped his arms around the man's waist and heaved.

Struck by over two hundred pounds of fast-moving muscle, Morgan was sent flying. Still locked together, they cannoned into Hilde's hindquarters, knocking her off balance enough for Greymalkin to slash open a long wound on her shoulder. Will cracked his baton across Morgan's right wrist, and though he dropped the sword, a dagger appeared in his left hand and he stabbed it into Will's thigh even as Will twisted away.

Greymalkin sank his fore claws into Hilde's flanks, his hind legs raking at her ribs. She hurled herself to the side to try to shake him off, and bite at Jesse as she did so. Her jaws closed around his forearm, and she wrenched him from Morgan, shredding his flesh. Jesse yelled as much in anger as pain, and punched her in the face with his free hand. Hilde released him and immediately turned on Greymalkin. They became a snapping and rolling tangle of teeth and claws as she tried to dislodge him. When Grey leapt away from her, Will dived in and brought his baton down on the base of her skull so hard Jesse thought the metal would bend. She yelped and wavered on her feet, but didn't go down.

Morgan scooped up his sword in his left hand, and plunged towards Will. Jesse lunged for him and grabbed his ankle. Morgan kicked him in the head, and he saw stars for a moment. Greymalkin threw his bulk between them with a deep yowl of fury. Morgan scrambled away and called to Hilde. She limped to him and the night seemed to fold around them. They disappeared. The whole incident had lasted only minutes.

"What the fuck?" Will panted. "Ow! God, that hurts. Jess--are you okay? What the fuck just happened?" Jesse scarcely heard him. He huddled over his left arm, teeth gritted on the searing pain while his blood splashed onto the grass.
