Common name: Jade plant

Botanical names: Crassula ovata, Crassula argentea. The word crassula is Latin for “fat” or “thick.” Ovata means “egg-shaped.”

Other names: Baby jade, Japanese rubber plant

Who it’s good for: People who want a plant that looks plastic but is actually real, instead of the other way around; people who want to tinker and fuss over a succulent bonsai tree

Appearance: Jade plants have multiple woody stems bearing clusters of fleshy, shiny, dark green, egg-shaped leaves at the ends of their branches. The leaves are about 1 to 3 inches (2 to 7.5 cm) long and develop a red edge in sufficient sunlight. Mature plants can reach up to 5 feet (1.5 m) in height and produce star-shaped pink or white flowers in winter. The bark of mature plants peels away in horizontal strips.
