Copycat

“What do you think?” Carmen answered with no preamble on the first ring.

“It’s her.” I was certain of it. After paging through the crime scene photos of the murder that had taken place the day before I arrived—which explained its absence from the press, which surely would have prevented me from coming with a tri-state radius of this town—I knew we weren’t dealing with a copycat. “I’m willing to advise you in an unofficial capacity. But if you try to pull me into this—”

“I would never do that to you.” Her voice was quiet, respectful. “You know me better than that.” I did.

“All right. If you have time to meet this evening, I’ll go over a few things with you. But that’s it. Then I’m leaving.” I would have no part of this a second time. Ethically, given my proximity to the victims the last time it happened, I doubted I would even be assigned to the case if Carmen hadn’t come to me and it had somehow found its way down the pipeline of horrible coincidence onto my desk. I felt certain that Carmen had downplayed her own closeness to the murders in order to remain on the case herself.

I hadn’t seen anything in the file about our interviews twelve years ago, any witness interviews, or any information regarding the previous three murders. I knew then why she had come to me. They were treating it like a new case. They were treating it like a copycat.

“How about Memories?” she suggested.

I smiled sardonically. “How appropriate,” I said.
