Chapter Seven

“I need a current address for Berryman,” I tell Officer Wallace.

“Figured as much, so I already have it. He lives in upstate New York.”

No.

“Um, are you sure?” I ask.

“Very sure.”

No.

I look at Mitchell. “I’m getting a firm no on that.”

“Could it be because he’s gone into hiding?” Mitchell eyes the paper, even though I’m sure there’s nothing on it that Officer Wallace hasn’t already told us.

“Possibly.” I might be sensing that upstate New York will never be his home again. “We need to get a dog out of the Berryman’s residence on Cedar Terrace,” I tell Officer Wallace.

“Since the mortgage wasn’t paid off yet, I’ll have to contact the bank where the mortgage was obtained. In situations like this, they usually give consent pretty quickly, bypassing the need for a warrant.”

“Tell them about the dog. I don’t know how long it’s been left alone there,” I say.

Wallace nods and walks off.

This is turning into the longest day ever. “None of us has eaten all day,” I say. “Maddie and Trevor, you should go. We know who we’re looking for now. There’s really no need for you to stick around.”

“No way,” Maddie says. “I’m not leaving until this guy is locked up.”

Mitchell stands up. “Let’s get some food, and hopefully by the time we’re finished eating, Wallace will have the okay to search the Berryman home.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I say, getting to my feet. “There’s a Chinese buffet near Cedar Terrace. If we go there, we’ll make good time to pick up the dog afterward.”

Forty-five minutes later, we’re all sufficiently stuffed. Trevor insists on paying for lunch, and while he does, Mitchell gets the go-ahead from Officer Wallace.

“He’s meeting us there to pick the lock on the door,” Mitchell says on the way back to his Explorer.

I carry a lockpick kit in my purse, but if Wallace wants to do the honors, I’m not going to object. “Great. Now we need to find a shelter that will take the dog until we can find it a new home.” I still can’t believe Mark would abandon his dog. He seemed to care about him in my vision, but he also seemed to know he wasn’t going to have a normal life after this. He’s either going to wind up on the run forever or in jail for the rest of his life. If I have my say, it will be jail.

Officer Wallace’s patrol car is already in the driveway when we pull up to the house. Mitchell parks on the street so he doesn’t block Wallace in.

“Thanks for taking care of this for us,” I tell Officer Wallace as we approach him at the front door, which he already has open for us.

“Happy to help. The bank wants this done quickly and quietly so it doesn’t affect resale of the home.”

Naturally. All they’re worried about is their money. Personally, I’m much more concerned about the dog.

“Any sign of the dog inside?” I ask.

Officer Wallace shakes his head. “He didn’t bark or come running when I opened the door.
