It seemed a promising dig: the slightly sunken

Unnaturally level look of a campsite

Repossessed by nature, by centuries

Of rain and wind. Our cross-trenching revealed,

After the crusted dirt, a surprising stratum

Of argilaceous shale (we had supposed

A more recent occupation), then limestone rubbish

(A further surprise), but then at last

(After this flood-borne silt and interbedding)

Another stratum of indurated soil

Where pollen analysis indicated the presence

Of wildflowers almost equally intermingled

With native weeds. From the regularity

Of the outline, from the petrified remains

Of a tree and an oblong structure

Resembling a gate (which was equally petrified)

We have deduced a garden, though we have found

Under the tumuli of apparent graves

No traces of humankind or of serpents, both

Notoriously prone to scattering and dissolving

Like feathers into innocent-seeming earth.
