CHAPTER 11: A Stormy Night

A few minutes later, Rose returned with a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies. “I figured you boys could use a little snack to soak up some of that whiskey you’ve been drinking,” Rose said, looking at the half-empty bottle of rye whiskey with a smile.

Brian, staring at the plate of what was obviously chip ahoy or some off-brand store cookies, just gave him a look that said you’ve got to be kidding.”

“Thanks, darling. Did you make these from scratch?” Booger said in his salesman’s voice.

“No, old man. Those are store-bought cookies. But I put them in the oven for a few minutes to warm them up.”

“Sounds good, sweetie. Thanks.”

“You know, Booger, your bomb shelter could use a good cleaning,” Rose said. “It’s more like a bachelor tomb, I’d say. And your stockpile of food could use another trip to the grocery store. You’re down to two six packs of beer, three bottles of bourbon, a 5-lb can of Folgers and a half-empty box of malted milk balls.”

“I forgot I had dessert in the cabinet. They’ll go great with your cookies. Could you bring us the malted milk balls, sweetie?”

“I threw them out,” Rose replied.

“Why?”

“They expired last year.”

“Darlin’, everyone knows there are two food groups that never have an expiration date: Twinkies and malted milk balls.”

“Well, someone should tell that green fuzz that was growing inside the box. Did you get them wet? I don’t even know how that’s possible.”

“Well damn, that’s a shame. They would go perfect with a good, aged rye whiskey,” Booger said.

“Yeah, I can see you boys have already started on one bottle,” Rose said, looking at the two half-empty glasses on the bar counter. “You’re not putting any of that in the coffee I made, are you?”

“I wouldn’t dare,” Booger said, not looking into her eyes.

“Hmph. I know you,” Rose said, looking straight at him until he looked back. When he did, it startled him, so he quickly changed the subject.

“Anything show up on the monitors yet, Rose?”

“Just raindrops. It’s coming down sideways outside, worse than last night, but I guess you wouldn’t know since your bachelor tomb has no windows,” she said. “Old man, what would ever possess you to build your home and not put some windows in?”

“Well, if I ever want to see what’s on the other side of those walls, I can just go outside. Besides, not having windows helps me sleep. Hell, no matter what time of the day or night, I can just turn the lights out, and it’s pitch dark in here. It’s great for sleeping.”

“Not too great for going to the bathroom, though. That room is disgusting. You should try turning the light switch on the next time you go in there. It takes a second.”

“I’ll keep that in mind if I can find it. It’s impossible to see anything with the lights out,” Booger said with a smile. “Rose, darling, why don’t you move in here with me, and I’ll promise to change my wicked ways.
