The Preparation Pit Stop
Your second pit stop takes place approximately three yards behind the ball, in a direct line from the ball to the target. Your task in this stop: to set up a feeling for the coming shot, mentally and physically. Look for an interim target on the line from the ball to the target. This is a useful aid in alignment and will help you to point you in the right direction. You can imagine one or two practice swings in your head or imagine the shot itself in order to get a feel for the swing. Important: Make your practices swings parallel (square) to the target line and face in the direction of the target. This is a prerequisite for the body and mind to attune to the target. When chipping, it is advisable to plan a couple more practice swings than in the long game. Finally visualize the flight of the ball in your mind’s eye. Only leave the preparation pit stop when you are confident that you will be able to give your best. In detail, here are the steps you will take in the preparation pit stop:
• Define an interim target about one yard in front of the ball, for instance, a leaf, an old tee, pebbles, blade of grass, divot.
• Imagine the swing as a movement sequence.
• Think of your swing in simple imagery.
• Make one or two practice swings behind the ball and parallel to the target line.
• Focus on the target.
• Visualize the golf ball flying or rolling to the target.
Practical hints
> All your senses are directed towards the target.
> You breathe calmly and regularly.
> Your central idea is “determination”.
