We carried Luna back to the cave and laid her in the bed, while Lilith flopped onto the couch. No one said a word as everyone settled in around Luna. Her cheeks were tear- stained, and several of the guys who had known Nan for years had also cried. The beauty of being a fire elemental was that tears could evaporate faster than they could fall. But my heart still hurt for the loss of Nan. We had watched her body slowly fade from existence, carried away on the wind as if it had never been.

I sat at the far end of the bed and just watched over everyone. Zeph was curled around Luna holding her close as she wept in her sleep. Slade and Ty were holding each other close, as Ty cried into Slade’s chest. The problem with a water elemental was, when they cried, they bawled. The others were all around, some consoling others or just holding each other. I just sat away from everyone trying to be strong for Luna and the others.

I stayed awake long after everyone had fallen asleep, watching as Luna tossed in her sleep. I must have dozed off at some point, only to be awakened by a keening wail from Luna. I jolted awake as she lashed out and wailed. Zeph pulled her close to his chest as she beat against his chest and cried out. I slid closer to her back letting my heat soothe her from behind as Zeph rocked her slowly.

His hand stroked her hair slowly and we sat in the semi-darkness and rocked her. Her sobs began to lessen until just a sniffle remained. “Why?” she whispered into Zeph’s chest. “Why me?”

I rubbed her back slowly as Zeph looked at me over her shoulder. “I don’t know, sunshine, she didn’t tell us why, just that it had to be you. I would give anything to take away the pain.” His words were soft and soothing, but she just kept asking why. I pulled her back against my chest and warmed myself up further. I felt her body relax into the heat of my chest and Zeph’s rocking.

Her words softened into rhythmic breathing and then Zeph and I laid down facing each other with Luna cradled between us. He looked as lost as I felt, but we knew we needed to be strong for Luna.
