I expected Freya to stop by the pens with her precious cats, but she didnât. Instead, she entered the huge thatched building attached to the outside pens. I stepped inside as well, almost overcome by the heady smells of numerous animals. On Earth, I had very much been a city kid and was never exposed to any kind of livestock, so the sound and smells of the animals were completely foreign to me.
The buildingâs architecture reminded me of an imperfect wheel. Like spokes, hallways fanned out in an array of stalls. They were full of a variety of snorting and snuffling animals. Chariots and sleighs of varying sizes stuffed the stalls that werenât full of animals. The center of the stable appeared to be a saddling or cleaning station of some kind, equipped with huge racks of brushes and riding equipment.
This central area currently contained a stunning silver chariot crafted as delicately feminine as the crown on Freyaâs head. Strapped to it were her two huge cats, their fur each brushed to a silky sheen. The stableâs warm light made their smokey gray hues a shifting blue color. Even with their surreal bridles, they were still undeniably very cute.
Freya hopped up on the chariot and grabbed the reins that a nearby stable hand offered her. âCome on up, Astrid!â
âCats pull your chariot?â
âOf course,â she said simply, as if cat chariots were a very normal thing. She pointed to each purring, cuddly mass. âThis is Bygul, and this is Trjegul. They are my beautiful babies. They were a gift from Thor.â She wiggled her eyebrows at me suggestively. I rolled my eyes and hopped up beside her.
She gave a command in what I suspected was Norse, and four stable hands opened two great double doors to the outside. She clucked her tongue and gave another soft command, and her two cats bounded merrily towards the sunlight. The open back of the chariot made me uneasy, and I gripped the front of it to keep from tumbling off.
I had never been pulled by horses, so I canât say how it compared to being pulled by cats, but the ground rolled under us easily. The fields Heimdall and I ran through flew by in a blur of colors, and before long the multicolored hues of the fields transformed into a biting landscape of white and blue.
âWhere are we?â I asked Freya. She looked regal and powerful at the helm of her chariot.
âI am taking you to the frozen southern lands, near the Bifrost. Theyâre cold, but beautiful.â
I pulled my cloak tighter around me, grateful for its warmth and fox fur hood.
âWhatâs the Bifrost?â I kept my voice raised, even though the sound of cat paws was infinitely quieter than I imagined horsesâ hooves would be.
âItâs the bridge between worlds, between Asgard and Midgard.â She leaned in and gave me a friendly shoulder check. âMidgard is our word for Earth, and the Bifrost is Heimdallâs domain.â She wiggled her eyebrows again.
I drank in the breathtaking, desolate views that surrounded us.
