Jake slid into the driver’s seat. “Well?”

Mallory shut off her phone.

“Couldn’t hear much except I thought maybe I caught the name of the person she called. Jake, I think she called Rita.”

“You sure?”

Mallory, after a moment, shook her head. She shoved the phone into her pocket.

“No, sorry. It may have just been wishful thinking.”

CHAPTER 26

“What do you want?” The voice on the phone sounded juvenile and defensive.

“Is that the way you answer the phone?” asked Mallory.

“Hanging up now.”

“Wait! I need help with… visual and digital relation. VADR,” said Mallory reading from her notes.

There was silence on the line, but no hangup.

“You were recommended,” continued Mallory.

“Can’t help you and don’t know any… whatever you said.”

“She said you were the best.”

Silence, which to Mallory meant the person was thinking. Best to shut up and let them determine which way things were going to go.

“Who she?” came the voice finally.

“Sharon Ollestad. Sacramento. I.T. division.”

The phone jostled. “You know Ollestad?”

“Worked for her. Two years.”

“And you’re still breathing. Congratulations.” The voice was friendlier now. “Who are you?”

“Name’s Mallory Dimante, a Private investigator. You can check me out with Ollestad. So, you’ll help?” asked Mallory.

“We’re busy.”

“It’s with a phone and it’s important.”

“I can give you the number for Verizon and ATT. They can help with phones.”

“Listen,” said Mallory. “Sharon said you guys were the best. She didn’t say you were assholes. We’ll pay.”

“Ollestad, huh.”

“Yeah.”

More thinking, then. “Shit, okay. There is a religious bookstore, the Crown and the Scepter at least that was their name last week. Meet in an hour out front.”

“Where is it?”

There was a laugh. “You’re a private investigator. You find it.”
