ANDY
The first day was normal. I went to classes, talked with my friends, ate lunch, met with teachers, had volleyball practice . . . nothing unusual happened. And I didn’t expect anything to. But as I was getting a ride home from my dad, my phone buzzed. A text from Sophie. Hm.
“LOOK WHAT MY MOM JUST SENT ME! AHHH,” Sophie texted me, punting an article from Metro UK my way. I’m sorry. What?!? Metro UK? Could it be possible that Tampon Run reached the United Kingdom? How could the journalist have found Tampon Run? It had only been—I checked my watch—maybe seventeen hours since we published Tampon Run. There was no way someone could have found out about it. From the freaking United Kingdom. But I clicked on the article on my phone, and it wasn’t a dud. Someone had written a full-fledged piece on our game—and we hadn’t even asked them to!
“WOOAAAHHH!” I responded to Sophie’s text. “WOW THIS IS SO COOOOOOL.”
“THERE ARE OTHERS TOO. WOW AHH WOW AHH WOW.” Caps were in no shortage that night.
I sat at home on my bed, reading the Metro article over and over again. “Periods aren’t really a great source of lols but this could be about to change thanks to Andy and Sophie (that’s all we know).” That’s all we know. I laughed. We had slogged over the game and spent tons of time putting together a list of outlets to reach out to—but we had forgotten to put anything on the site other than the game and my pixel art representation of us with our first names. We didn’t think to add our last names, bios, and contact information, since we didn’t anticipate that anyone other than our friends and family would actually find and care about Tampon Run. We were figuring it out as we went, which meant we were inevitably going to make some mistakes along the way. All the author of the article knew about us was our first names and that I imagined myself in a Chewbacca costume and Sophie imagined herself in a bathrobe and tiara. That night Sophie jotted down bios and contact information, and I immediately added the copy to the site.
