In addition to publishing her artwork online and in books, Christie found another way to counter harmful messages. On Instagram, where her account @meandmyed.art has more than 34,000 followers, she points out that men can have eating disorders, too, and that a person who appears to be at a healthy weight can still have a dangerous illness. She creates drawings showing healthy and powerful bodies of all colors, shapes, and sizes. She offers advice and support to people struggling with eating disorders. Christie also joined the body positive (BoPo) movement, where she found accounts, like @bodyposipanda, that have helped her feel confident and hopeful.

Christie admires powerful women like Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, and Kesha for fighting to change the way the world views mental illness. “They showed me that you could talk openly about eating disorders, addiction, and trauma, and still be respected and loved,” she explains.

Christie is now working toward becoming a psychologist, specializing in eating disorders. One recent challenge for her has been accepting the body changes that came with her first pregnancy. “A woman’s body is a magnificent thing,” Christie says. “There’s so much power in it—we can even carry life within us! But we’re constantly told by society that we have to be skinny. I just think, ‘No! What about what a body can actually do?’ ”
