CHAPTER 17

Lily’s eyes went wide at the sight of the broken window and the fist-sized rock on the floor. “Did you call the police?”

“Not yet,” Cassie said, swiping her phone from her night table. “I was just about to when you knocked.”

“I’ll grab my shoes and head downstairs. Careful when you follow me. And bring Willy. I don’t want him to try to walk across that glass.”

Cassie nodded as she typed 9-1-1 on her keypad. She spoke with the emergency dispatcher, explaining the situation. Afterward, she scooped the cat into her arms and picked her way through the glass after sliding into her soled slippers.

Lily waited for her in the living room. “Are you okay?” she inquired again.

Cassie nodded. “Yeah, just… startled.”

Lily shook her head. “I can’t believe someone threw a rock through your window. This is becoming dangerous. First, they lurk around the house, now this?”

“Probably a high school kid on a dare.”

“Well, a high school kid should know better than to destroy someone’s property. Someone could have been hurt!”

Blue and red flashing lights painted the inside of the living room, punctuating the end of Lily’s statement. Cassie leapt from her seat on the couch and hurried toward the door. As she swung it open, Wyatt peered inside.

“Hey, Cassie,” he said with a wince.

“I’m so sorry to call again, Wyatt,” Cassie said as she backed up and gestured for him to enter.

“No problem. Dispatcher said you had a rock thrown through a window?”

Cassie nodded as Lily joined them. “Lily,” Wyatt greeted her with a nod.

“Hi, Wyatt,” Lily said as she leaned against the door jamb. “Sorry to bother you again.”

“No bother at all, Lily. Sorry we keep meeting under these circumstances.”

“I’ll show you the scene of the crime,” Cassie said as she pointed upstairs.

Wyatt glanced upstairs and nodded. Cassie led him to her bedroom. Crumbled glass pieces lay scattered across the dresser near the window and the floor. Wyatt frowned at the scene. He glanced out the window.

“Did you see anyone?”

“No,” Cassie admitted. “I was in bed when the rock came through. I hadn’t seen anyone before that, though I wasn’t looking out the window.”

“They had to be close, I’d reckon.”

Cassie sighed. “Maybe the alarm system and new locks deterred them from getting into the house. So, we got this instead.”

“Can’t say that’s much of an improvement.”

“No,” Cassie agreed. “Though I suppose it’s better than them lurking around in the house.”

Glass crunched under Wyatt’s feet as he stepped toward the object laying on the floor. He cocked his head and stared at it for a moment then squatted down.

He pulled gloves from his back pocket and snapped them on before lifting the object. Cassie stretched her neck from the doorway to peer over his shoulder. “I saw the paper earlier but didn’t want to disturb the scene. Does it say anything?”

Wyatt stood and joined Cassie at the door. As he approached, she noted a rubber band holding a white paper onto the fist-sized object. He peeled the rubber band off and unwrapped the object.
