Chapter Six
THE WAITING wasn’t any easier just because he had a distraction. Gareth had never been any good at it and waiting, whether for orders, people, or Jack to come home, seemed to take more effort the older he got.
The phone call with his mother had left him scowling, and he attacked the onions on his chopping board with more vigor than was strictly necessary. Jack had gone to see Aidan Conrad, and he would be bringing Nico and Daniel with him when he returned, while his mother headed off on a long-planned break with a friend from school. Gareth had looked forward to having the two boys around for the New Year’s celebrations, convinced that their company would stop him and Jack from getting mired in work. That anticipation was now tainted with newly gained knowledge and his memories of Jack, worried about inflicting fresh hurt on two boys who had been hurt enough.
He’d been right about both his mother’s reasons for not telling Jack about the missing boy. Trying not to influence his search for data, she’d also been trying to protect Jack. By focusing on a single facet of the case, she’d hoped not to remind him of his crusade, afraid that he’d start to investigate Robbie Keats’s disappearance. In principle, it was a commendable move. Unfortunately, his mother hadn’t realized just how much Nico and Daniel had come to mean to Jack. So it was a move that was bound to fail.
Robbie Keats was not the problem. Not right then.
Jack’s code was a rigid one, defining good and evil in terms of how much harm they caused those who couldn’t defend themselves. It wasn’t a conventional code by any means. Rob a bank and Jack would happily look the other way. Hurt a security guard or a customer while you did it and Jack would hunt you down. Hurt someone he felt responsible for or hurt a child, and there would be no stopping him. And yet, family dynamics made no sense to him. He was wary of close ties. He held everyone and everything around him at arm’s length. But he had grown so protective over Nico and Daniel that he considered letting Daniel’s parents get away with a criminal act in order not to hurt Daniel.
Which was downright scary. And not something Gareth had wanted to discuss with his mother.
So instead he’d inquired what the boys fancied for dinner, and now here he was with fresh bread baking in the oven, chopping onions for the requested French onion soup with floating cheese. All the while wondering how to help Daniel. And Jack.
He wanted nothing more than to go and settle the mess, sort everything out, and come home and report it was done. Taking charge and fixing messes were what he did best. What he’d done for years while he served. What he still did every day running the corporate security office at Nancarrow Mining. No different from what Jack had wanted to do for Daniel, really.
