I am not alive.

If this is the next life, where is my family and my beloved Keeva? Would I not be free to run through golden fields? Would I not feel the sun on my neck, hear Bron’s laugh as we swim in the river?

There are no fields here. No river. No warmth.

Just darkness. Cold, endless darkness.

And the beast.

Sometimes it leaves me. And I drift in nothingness, abandoned by time, where I cannot sleep and I cannot wake.

Other times it goads me. A drag of fur across my cheek. Talons that trace my skin. My fingers catching sharp teeth, waiting for the bite that does not come.

Then there are times I cannot escape.

I am always in the woods. I am running.

I can sense it, smell it, feel its hunger, its lust to bring fear, its joy in the chase.

How many times have I run through the night?

I have been prey for eternity. Hunted again and again and again.

Truly, I am cursed. When my blood fed a fire, and an old crow spoke, ‘There are spirits upon your path, Aine… They seek that strength, that light in you.’

This is the darkest of things, so ancient and terrible. And I set it free.

To be a slave in death as I was in life.

I am lost in the woods.

I am a ghost.
