CHAPTER 13

Amy parked behind the patrol car which sat in front of Doug’s house. As she stepped from the Challenger, she noticed the officer inside look into his rearview mirror and immediately leave his squad car. The fellow stood six feet four or five and had the broad shoulders of a professional linebacker. He stared warily in her direction and blocked her path toward the house. ‘I guess the replacement from HQ arrived while I was gone.’

Before the uniform could question her, Amy waved and flashed her badge. He grinned, waved back, and returned to his seat in the cruiser. She trotted to the front door and knocked. Lieutenant McMahon ushered her inside. Amy inquired in surprise, “Sir, what are you doing here?”

“It hasn’t hit the news yet, but we just discovered the body of Jose Hernandez, a known gang banger and drug dealer, in a gray Camry that was reported stolen a few hours before you two were attacked at Boston Market. The ME reported he was shot in the head, neck, and left shoulder. I’m willing to bet ballistics will match his wounds to your service weapons.

I came to see how you two were doing and to advise Doug here that his security details will continue until the last drug dealer is captured. With the shootings yesterday and the phone threat last night, it would be remiss not to provide extra security. It’s odd that this dealer feels that killing my detectives will somehow help his court case when he is caught.”

“I guess the scumbag murderer thinks that without a living witness to his original crime, he can’t be convicted. Little does he know that I’ve already given the department a sworn statement regarding his culpability for Tony’s death and my injury that will be admissible at trial, should anything happen to me in the meantime.”

“Yeah, well, try not to get injured or killed until we get this guy, Doug. You’re still off the case and you need more rest. I am specifically ordering you to stay home.”

“We can still make calls on our cold case from here, right?”

“Yes, but Doug, you are not to leave this house to interview witnesses or for any other reason. Perhaps someone will tell you something over the phone that will crack your case. I expect you to stay here until I tell you otherwise, understand?”

“I hear you sir.”

The lieutenant looked over at Amy and added, “Amy, you are to stay with Doug and work from his residence during your shift. At the end of the day, you may return home but neither of you is to appear at headquarters until I say so. Is that clear?”

“Yes sir. I understand.”

“Good. I must leave now and return to headquarters. Maybe the two detectives working your case will have some new information.”

“They’re just blind squirrels. Why don’t you put them back on patrol? They couldn’t find their own mothers, let alone any acorns.”

“It’s true they aren’t you and Tony or your new partner, but they have closed a few cases.
