Forty-nine

Oliver Griffith wasn’t used to being home alone, at least not overnight. Since he and Josie had met each other, seventeen months ago, and even more so after they’d gotten married, they’d practically spent every evening together. They really did love each other’s company. They were into the same type of music. They liked the same movies and the same kind of food. Their sense of humor seemed to have been tailor-made because they were constantly making each other laugh. They were into the same sexual kinks… in short, they were as perfect for each other as perfect could be. Sleeping alone in their bed was a brand new experience for Oliver, one that he didn’t like at all.

Josie and her friends had left for Stacey’s hen-night extravaganza weekend in Vegas early yesterday morning. Last night – game night – Oliver tried making the most of it. He invited a few friends around to watch what turned out to be the closest of games between the LA Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs. Unfortunately for them, the Spurs won by four – 110 to 106.

Once all his buddies had left, and with the house all to himself, Oliver had felt a little lost, not really knowing what to do. He’d thought about giving Josie a quick call, but he’d known she’d be out with all the girls, having a blast, and he sure as hell hadn’t wanted to come across as the needy husband who missed his wife too much. Instead, he’d poured himself a few more shots of whisky and allowed the alcohol to act as a sleeping aid for the night, a decision that he had thoroughly regretted this morning. His head had hurt with such intensity, he’d thought that he could actually hear his brain sloshing around inside his cranium and knocking against its walls every time he moved his head. It was only by about 11:30 a.m., after a Spanish omelet and a detox smoothie, that Oliver’s hangover began to subside.

The rest of the day went by lazily. Josie called him at around one in the afternoon, and by the sounds of it, her hangover trumped his by a few thousand points, but she and the girls were in great spirits. At that time, they were all at the Mandalay Bay Beach Hotel for lunch, but they had the entire day planned out, culminating in dinner at the Edge Steakhouse followed by the big surprise night for Stacey, Josie’s best friend and the bride-to-be.

‘Umm… would that involve strippers, by any chance?’ Oliver had asked, his tone playful, but with a concerned edge.

‘We’re in Vegas, honey,’ Josie had replied. ‘What do you think? They don’t call this place “Sin City” for nothing.’

‘Oh, OK… I’m sure you’ll all have a great time.’ Oliver had tried to sound breezy, but Josie knew him way too well.

‘Aww, honey, you’re jealous?’

‘Nope. Not at all. I’m good.’ Oliver’s reply had been too curt, something that was very unlike him.

‘Oh, that’s so sweet.’ Oliver could hear the smile in Josie’s tone.
