Just because those in Generation Z have access to nearly infinite amounts of information does not mean that they stay informed about all news, however. Our study found that Generation Z students have specific issues they like to follow, particularly those around civil rights, especially gay rights, women's rights, and racial equality. It is particularly interesting that they like to follow stories about gay rights, but as discussed in chapter 6, few are concerned about issues facing the gay community. They also have issues they do not keep up with, specifically around health care and healthy and safe food.

If they want more information about a specific major current event, like finding out the winner of a sporting event, following an election, or learning more about a natural disaster, rather than just waiting for news updates that might be of interest, they use filters such as Twitter hashtags to parse available information from a variety of channels. They do, not only use news aggregators and push notifications to get the news; they also seek out news on mainstream websites, through word-of-mouth, and on television to get information that is timely like who won the World Series.5

Regardless, if the news comes to them or they seek it out, Generation Z students like to stay informed about what they are interested in. That is why it is no surprise we found that keeping up on news is by far the number one way Generation Z students engage with the world around them.
