CHAPTER THIRTEEN

That evening, Kyden was at work, again. Who the hell thought two bank holidays the same weekend would be a good idea? Not someone who worked in a bar, that’s for sure. Usually, by the time Friday and Saturday were out of the way, he and the other staff could enjoy Sunday, knowing it would be a little quieter, and ready for Monday, the easiest night of the week. But now it felt like he was on the third Friday in a row, and a night off couldn’t come soon enough.

Although they didn’t stay open late on a Sunday, meaning he wouldn’t have to stay up until the early hours, he was both hoping and not hoping to have company that night. He’d sent Clay a message after his conversation with Cass at breakfast, offering to buy him a drink to apologise for how he behaved during the altercation two nights before. He’d gone with Instagram as the best way to get in touch with him; that would be far less awkward than unblocking him on Humpr.

A couple of hours after he’d reached out to him, Clay responded, saying he’d see how he felt later. Kyden told him he was welcome to pop into The Crypt any time; he’d pay for his drinks and they could chat if the bar wasn’t busy. Kyden had figured that that was the best way; Clay would probably arrive towards the beginning of the evening, when it would be quiet enough for him to clear the air and find a way to ask the favour he wanted, then when the punters came in, Clay would leave.

But it was gone eleven, with still no sign of Clay. Did I really piss him off that much? Kyden wondered. He was dead keen after we slept together. Too keen. Surely I’m right in thinking he’d want the opportunity to see me again, if he really did like me that much.

Just as Kyden was giving up on the idea of gaining Clay’s help with his quest, he walked through the door. It’s so late now, though. And it’s still too loud in here to have a proper conversation. Then Kyden realised that he hadn’t come alone; another guy followed him in. Is he really going to play the ‘make him jealous’ card? Ha.

Kyden got down from the DJ booth and served Clay and the man with him, who turned out to be called Ranjit. He was less attractive than Clay, but his smile was more charming. They looked to be a similar age, early to mid-twenties, and both ordered a bottle of flavoured cider. A guilt-inducing look from Clay convinced Kyden to pay for Ranjit’s drink too, then Clay seemed to relax. I’m glad he’s brought someone with him. I can feel less bad about leaving him to it while I work. No real opportunity to ask him a favour, though.

An hour later, the place was winding down. They’re all as worn out as I am from the long weekend, thank fuck, Kyden surmised as more customers left the bar.
