Seagulls cross the sunset en route from this lot

over the interstate to the next.

A waning on their undersides—blades glinting the air—the image

recalls a fear I’ve had: to confront an image, a scene, your face—

to slice a poppy’s fruit and want to find its petals intact.

How, looking back, it’s straightforward.

Simpler explanations, it seems, are, everything else equal, better

than complexer ones.
