Chapter 13

After Kann fetched me, like a puppy, we were headed up the stairs. A few steps up a banshee scream stopped me dead in my tracks.

I shuddered. “What the hell is that?”

Kann’s jaw flexed shut as he pushed me up more stairs. Oh no, he didn’t.

“You will tell me or I’m screaming, too.”

He sighed. “That’s Hannah. After her mate died a couple of months ago, she’s been getting mating game challenges a lot.”

A pregnant female with a dead mate. Okay, maybe I could look at her as something else than a she-demon.

“What happened to her mate?”

Kann fixed his eyes in the direction of the sounds. “Poisoned and stabbed to death…slowly and over a long period of time.”

My legs stiffened. “Holy shit! Who’d do something like that?”

He flexed his jaw. “Well…Hannah. Apparently he was thinking of taking his business elsewhere. Hannah doesn’t take news like that lightly.”

My eyes widened. “She killed him? Don’t you guys have divorce or something?”

“Ah, sure, a mating can easily be undone. It’s not a big deal or anything. But being with young, she’s a bit more…”

“Psychotic?” I muttered, shivering.

His beautiful shoulders rolled into a shrug. Wow.

“And there’s no police or anything? What she did is fair game?”

“All kills are fair game. Survival of the fittest.”

No freaking way. “In the marital bed? You’re kidding me.”

He didn’t look like he was. So gargoyles slept expecting to be stabbed to death by their mates? I should have become a couple’s therapist instead of a private assistant. There was a fortune to be made with these guys. I could almost picture the couple sessions ending in a blood bath. Perhaps as a therapist you could take a stake to both their hearts. Now that would be definitive problem solving. A sickly metallic stink crawled up my nose.

“Yuck, what is that smell?”

“Blood.”

Without much thinking, I snuck around him and sought the source. A couple feet away an open balcony gave view to a courtyard massacre. Two figures were circling each other, their eyes glued to one another. The male had a couple of open gashes around his arms and shoulders from what I could see. Hannah looked like she was having fun. The stupid dude made a run at her, snarling like a rabid dog. She snickered and her teeth sank into his throat. She ripped a chunk out, leaving the male wailing and thrashing on the ground. Bile rose in my throat as she spit the chunk out in his face and walked away. The Seera Prima appeared beside him, drawing some wacky symbols in the air with her hands. A white glow engulfed the body and then he was full and healthy. Okay, I was completely grossed out and lost.

“What just happened?”

Kann rested a hand in the middle of my back and tried massaging my tension away.

“He lost. Most of them will. Hannah is very dragon-like at her young age. The twins are some of the most powerful gargoyles in our Haus.”

These guys were wackos, that’s what they were.
