1931 Gandhi photographed before departing for London to attend the Second Round Table Conference. Also in the picture are (front row, left to right) Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sarojini Naidu (face back to the camera) and Kasturba Gandhi (extreme right).
At noon on August 29, 1931, Gandhi boarded the SS Rajputana in Bombay to sail to London to attend the Second Round Table Conference. He was accompanied by Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sarojini Naidu and his son Devdas, as well as Mirabehn (Madeleine Slade), who considered Gandhi her spiritual father, and the industrialist G. D. Birla. A huge crowd had gathered to see them off. “There is every chance I will return empty-handed,” he told them, but once on board, he seemed in a jovial mood, joking with the captain about being his prisoner, and was seen enjoying himself on the ship’s bridge.
