The initial assault was done and won with little-to-no involvement from me which, though initially disappointing, brought to mind the first levels of hundreds if not thousands of games I’d played in the past and made me realize that, despite being incredibly well-crafted, that’s what I was doing.

I wasn’t in the endgame, I wasn’t fighting a boss that would come up again and again, I was doing the first bounty hunt that was clearly designed to see how I’d play it.

Anyway, after that epiphany, I turned back to the damaged façade of Jameson’s house and saw that, along with a good deal of destruction to the house itself, Amy had done a good job of clearing the lower level.

“Reckon we should go in now?” I asked as Spencer landed beside me and Flint came to perch on my shoulder, “Like, I think we should, but I want to make sure you’re happy with that decision first.”

Spencer appeared to think on the question for a few moments before making an affirmative crumbling sound with his face.

“Great,” I said with a nod and a smile before starting my purposeful march towards the house, “let’s go collect ourselves a bounty.”

I’d like to think we looked pretty damn cool striding towards the house but there’s some part of me that knew to our audience we looked nothing but terrifying. After all, Spencer was covered in blood and gore, Flint was still belching flames, and I was acting like it was all no big deal.

Still though, scary is kind of cool.

“Hold your horses there, friend,” I said as one of Jameson’s men tried to limp away from the house, causing all of us to stop in our tracks, “where’s Jameson?”

The guy, who couldn’t have been older than eighteen, looked at me with nothing but terror in his eyes.

“Alright, I’m goin’ to ask again,” I sighed before taking aim at his heart with my rifle, “where’s. Jameson?”

That time the escapee didn’t hesitate, pointing at the second floor of the house before clutching his ribs and letting out a sharp breath.

“Thanks,” I said with a nod, turning my gun away, “go on now, turn yourself in at Schidt’s Hole.”

The kid seemed confused but was quick to do as he was told.

“Spencer?” I asked, looking up at him as his head tracked the kid’s limping gait curiously, “I’m goin’ to need you to bust Amy out of that car, okay? Make sure she ain’t hurt too bad.”

Spencer, who was still watching the runner intently, nodded.

“Good,” I said with a grin before walking into the wrecked house, “maybe I’ll finally manage to do somethin’ other than wait in the car…”

It was that moment, almost to the second, where one of Jameson’s men decided it’d be a good idea to shoot up out from under the chunk of wall he’d been crushed under as I walked over it.
